Hi the experts, not being able to reinstall a P1120 I bought, I'm trying now to tweak and slim down the W2K I got with it. I have seen Connie's recomendations of "Systweak Boost XP, Systweak Advanced Registry Optomizer, Registry Fix, Tweak XP Tweaking Utility, Tweak UI, Tracks Eraser Pro, and Spybot Search & Destroy" plus XQDC, LitePC (XPLite&2000Lite) and others mention Tweak UI, CacheMan and Sysinternal Process". Well, are they all alternative options or you should use all of them? If not, which of them should do the job? This p1120 needs almost 2 minutes to shut down, and it stays for more than 1 minute "saving settings" before that. Does somebody now what setting could change this "saving" and slow shtudown? Then I need advice on concepts like "clear Page file at Schut Down", "automatically Unload Dlls from Memory", "Enable Large System Cache", "disable Windows File Protection", "disable Last Acces Update on files", "disable 8.3 Name Creation", "Contiguous File allocation", "increase Critical Worker threads", "enable Ultra DMA-66", "automatic Windows refresh", "Create separate process for Desktop and Explorer", "Enable command line completion", "generate Aministrative Shares for Drives", "expand FIFO buffer to 16 Byte"... thanks alot for any tip on any of these tweaks, Cinta |

Although the "Speed for Crusoe + Windows XP" thread is aimed at Windows XP users, many of the basic recommendations still apply for Win2000 users. For example, get a spyware remover for Windows 2000, defrag, get a good antivirus, etc.
Don't install the XP tweakers on Windows 2000. And if you find appropriate 2000 tweakers, don't install all of them at once. You should pick one, try it out, and then see if the performance was actually improved. Introducing a whole bunch of similar software to your system will probably only cause more problems. However, system tweakers often require more advanced knowledge of your operating system.
For specific background information on all those concepts you listed, it's probably better to do Google searches. Try a general Windows 2000 performance tweak search too, since that can lead to specific advice sites. |

The long pause at "saving your settings" is an oooold problem, I seem to recall it was fixed in a service pack. What updates have you applied? Also, check the MS KB.

thanks oion, I didn't know I couldn't use XP tweakers with w2000, I have been trying already BoostXP and Advance System Optimizer (which I don't know if it's only for XP). Tom, i appreciate your tip, I don't know which update I do have but I believe I have updated and downloaded till the last one, what should have resolved the problem with that mentioned update (your link) I don't know however what do you mean by "check the MS KB"... Still, any tip on how this tweaks should be checked/unchecked? "clear Page file at Schut Down", "automatically Unload Dlls from Memory", "Enable Large System Cache", "disable Windows File Protection", "disable Last Acces Update on files", "disable 8.3 Name Creation", "Contiguous File allocation", "increase Critical Worker threads", "enable Ultra DMA-66", "automatic Windows refresh", "Create separate process for Desktop and Explorer", "Enable command line completion", "generate Aministrative Shares for Drives", "expand FIFO buffer to 16 Byte" thanks again, cinta |

"MS KB" is the MicroSoft Knowledge Base, which is where the link I posted came from, I just searched for the issue.
I really don't recommend any of the so-called tweaks you list, some of them are XP-specific like system file protection, and most of them will yield you very little improvement and all will cost quite a bit of time and trouble. If you do try any of them, my advice is to backup early, backup often. And, be sure you know why you do any tweak, and measure its result.
